Hockey - a great opportunity for youth
In 2024, youth participation in community hockey in Canada has declined by nearly 33% over the past fifteen years, a decline that began long before the pandemic, following a peak of over half a million for U18s playing the sport in 2010. According to recent reports, the costs associated with hockey equipment, ice time, training and travel are too high for many families wanting to enroll their youngsters in hockey.
Located in the heart of the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region, Rouyn-Noranda is a hub of North American hockey. Its contribution to the NHL and to women's hockey is truly exceptional.
To counter this trend, a group of Rouyn-Noranda minor hockey alumni, with the support of partners and sponsors, decided to get involved in their community to make this great sport more accessible and affordable.
